We are delighted to confirm that Darren Oakey has been appointed as Head Coach of the FIMBA GB +35 Women.
Darren comes to us with 34 years experience coaching, and for the last 14 years has been involved in elite performance coaching at International and club level within the Welsh national team, Team NI and has also held several positions with GB basketball and the BBF, winning three FIBA European championship medals. Alongside this he is currently Head Coach of the WNBL Division 1, Bristol Flyers. Darren has huge shoes to fill following Coach AJ’s success in charge, under whose watch, the +35 team became one of FIMBA GB’s most successful teams, winning European Iron in 2022; World Cup Gold in 2024 and European Bronze in 2024.

This is a great opportunity to be involved in preparing a team for the world championships which is not an opportunity that comes along very often, it’s an honour to lead a great team and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’m also impressed with the progress that the women’s program has made especially the +35s this summer in the European championships – looking forward to starting work with the team in September.

I am delighted to be welcoming Coach Oakey to the organisation. He comes to us with a wealth of experience both nationally and internationally. When discussing our programme he really impressed me with his own motivations and aspirations for our team. It was a no brainer! I cannot wait to introduce him to the players and get started on September the 8th 9-1pm at North Birmingham Academy. I also want to thank Coach AJ for all he has done for this team and wish him well for the future.
