The FIMBA GB +55 Men have made a bold statement of intent with the appointment of former GB athlete Paul Hobrough as Captain.
FIMBA GB is on the international stage and is raising its standards constantly. Bringing Paul onboard with his wealth of international experience in major competitions and his experience as an Olympic standard athlete shows that we mean business as we prepare for the 2024 European Championships.

Hobrough will be instrumental in helping the players prepare for the European Championships and assist with recruitment of players for the squad.
There were 20 years between my last race for Great Britain (2003) in a kayak and representing my country in masters basketball at the European championships (2023). In between those years I have run my Physiotherapy business from start-up to its sale. I have managed business teams and worked with many Olympic athletes on their journeys to the very top. The very skills I have learned from sport have been the backbone to any successes I have found in sport, life and business. Leadership is not management, it is providing a stable platform from which real talent can perform. It is from this standpoint that I humbly accepted the greatest and proudest position of my career, as the new captain of the mens over 50’s FIMBA GB basketball team.
What does this mean to me? Everything. It is not recognition for my skills on court, but perhaps recognition of transferable skills I bring from a lifetime (accidentally) preparing for such a role. A captaincy is showing leadership, being able to lift spirits when required, delivering top down instructions in a way that involves everyone. To provide cohesion, focus and fast decision making when needed.
So if I will be any sort of captain, it will be with this quote in my mind ‘The great baskets are scored from a great pass.’ I am truly honoured and will give everything to ensure the team and its members make the most of every opportunity, breed success and maybe have just a little fun on the journey
