Nicky Shaw wins Special Award in Croatia

At the recent Masters Basketball World Cup in Croatia, FIMBA GB Lead Delegate Nicky Shaw was presented with a Special Recognition Award.

The award was part of a curtain raiser celebration to the Closing Medal Ceremony on Saturday 20th April, in front of all the participating teams and fans from around the globe. The award was for facilitating so many teams from Great Britain participating in the event, with 6 FIMBA GB teams and a further 2 sides representing GB, making us the highest represented nation behind hosts Croatia.

Nicky is the FIMBA GB Lead Delegate and currently plays for the +60 Women, although was coaching a mixed +55 Women’s team in Croatia this year. A fully qualified referee, including wheelchair basketball, in which she was privileged to officiate at the London 2012 Olympics, Nicky has held several key positions in British Basketball over the years. As a Director of Basketball England, Nicky was instrumental in defining a wide range of BE projects as well as the numerous policies, procedures and strategies required. At the British Basketball Federation, Nicky was a key ambassador for women’s basketball through coaching, officiating and playing, as well as working with FIBA to promote the HerWorldHerRules project to get more girls involved with basketball and overseeing the GB Women’s senior programme. In 2015 Nicky took over from the late Bill McInnes as Chair of GB Masters.  Following GB Masters example masters tournaments have now sprung up all over Europe and further afield.

It was with great surprise that I was honoured with a Special Award at the Masters Basketball World Cup in Omis, Croatia. I have always been passionate about Masters Basketball, giving all players the opportunity to keep playing the game we all love well into their fifties, sixties and seventies, with all the mental and physical benefits associated with participation in active sport.

To receive the Special Award in recognition of this passion was both unexpected and humbling, and I am very thankful to all the Committee that are involved in the MBWC for awarding it to me.
