GB Masters +50s Men Start Their Road to Munich

The first training session of the season for the GB Masters +50 Men took place over the weekend at a new venue, Hartpury College. With impressive facilities, including a double-court setup, the venue provides an excellent environment to support the development of the squad throughout the season.

There was a strong turnout, with a good mix of returning players and trialists in attendance. It is particularly encouraging to see such positive numbers within the group, with some players now progressing into the +55 Men’s age category. This reflects the continued depth and development of the GB Masters programme, while creating opportunities for players to continue their international basketball journey as they move through the age groups. Further players are expected to attend the November session.

Head Coach Danny James led the session, supported by Assistant Coach Adam Cole and Darren Cooke, who joins the coaching team as an additional assistant coach. Darren’s appointment will provide valuable support as the group continues to grow and the coaches work towards building competitive squads for the 2027 tournament programme.

The session focused on establishing a strong foundation for the season ahead, with particular emphasis on offensive cohesion, communication and defensive expectations. The coaches used the opportunity to assess the players in attendance, gaining valuable insight into the strengths and potential of the group ahead of the next stage of selection.

Player assessments will continue across the October and November sessions, with squad selections to follow in preparation for the 2027 competition programme. The tournament schedule has yet to be confirmed, although the management team is considering a number of potential destinations.

The team will not be travelling to Brazil for the 2027 FIMBA World Championships. The timing of the event and the associated costs would present significant challenges for both players and coaching staff, and alternative opportunities are being considered.

Overall, the opening session was a positive start to the season, with good numbers, a strong atmosphere and plenty of potential within the group. The new venue, expanded coaching team and encouraging level of attendance provide a solid platform as preparations continue for 2027.

Assistant Coach Adam Cole said:

“The session was a great way to blow away some cobwebs and set out the stall for this season. It was great to have a mix of returning players and some new guys. We know the November session will include more players hoping to join us.

“Having Hartpury as our venue for the sessions allows us to do more. The double-court facility will certainly meet our needs for the season ahead.”
