+60s FIMBA GB Women Training Report

Building on the lessons learned from previous fixtures, this weekend’s training sessions focused heavily on improving our finishing below the rim under added defensive pressure, while also continuing to develop our composure and decision-making against a full-court press.

A large emphasis was placed on reinforcing the team’s core fundamentals and strengthening the principles that underpin how we play together as a unit. Communication, spacing, defensive rotations, and trust within the system were all key themes throughout the sessions.

Recognising mobility as one of the squad’s greatest strengths, the coaching staff also worked with the players on identifying the right moments to change the tempo of the game. Transition offence and defensive recovery were major focuses, helping the team continue to develop a faster and more controlled style of play.

The squad were also delighted to welcome back Lesley O’Hanlon to training. Although Lesley unfortunately had to withdraw from the competition, she returned to support the team from the sidelines and take part in the session, bringing encouragement and positivity to the group. While the squad will undoubtedly miss having her available on court in Athens, it was fantastic to see her back involved with the team environment.

On Sunday, the team faced a stronger and younger opponent and produced another encouraging performance. When the sides last met, the game ended in a 20-point deficit, but this time the margin was reduced to just 8 points — a clear sign of the progress being made across the squad.

Head Coach, Alex said:

“If that’s not a great sign of improvement, I am not sure what is. The team has been putting the work in, learning from previous games during our review sessions, and many of them have also been putting significant work in away from team training. It’s amazing to see the improvements we are still making with Athens just around the corner.”
