As part of the FIMBA GB +55s women’s build-up to the European Championships in Athens, the team took part in a four-team tournament at RAF Cosford. They were joined by an All-Star team, which included players from the +55s squad and +50s FIMBA GB players. The RAF Women’s team—current inter-services champions and last year’s tournament winners—hosted the event while also competing. The fourth side was the English Universities national team.
The tournament offered the FIMBA GB +55s a valuable opportunity to test their offensive systems against younger, fitter opposition, providing a stern assessment of both strength and conditioning. It also allowed the team to run and refine defensive strategies aimed at neutralising high-tempo attacks.
FIMBA GB +55s and the All Stars met in the 3rd/4th place playoff. In an entertaining contest, the All Stars, coached by Jackie Bennett, edged the game to secure third place.
The RAF and English Universities teams contested the final. In a fast-paced and high-quality encounter, the Universities side pulled away in the final quarter to claim the trophy—bringing a fitting conclusion to an excellent competition.
Off the court, the tournament was marked by strong camaraderie, with all teams enjoying an evening meal together at a local pub.
Many thanks go to the RAF for hosting a well-run and enjoyable event.
Coach Coffey reflected positively on the experience:
“This tournament was exactly what we needed at this stage of our preparation. Playing against younger, high-energy teams really challenged us physically and mentally, and I was proud of how the group adapted—especially in executing both our offensive sets and defensive schemes under pressure. There’s still work to do, but this weekend showed the resilience, teamwork, and spirit that will be crucial for us heading into Athens.”
