The FIMBA GB +50s Men came together for another preparation session ahead of the FIMBA Maxibasketball European Championships in Athens this June.
It was another excellent session, with Head Coach Danny James and Assistant Coach Adam Cole putting the squad through their paces. With 24 players set to make up the two +50s teams for the Championships, the staff are getting closer to finalising selection.
The session once again focused on the fundamental areas of team preparation, including understanding offensive principles, floor spacing, and movement both with and without the ball. These concepts were broken down into smaller elements, with attention given to specific game scenarios.
A strong emphasis has been placed on maintaining proper spacing rather than chasing the ball—an approach that is becoming increasingly evident in the team’s development. Improved spacing, in particular, is creating more effective scoring opportunities.
There has also been clear progress in the team’s use of its big players, with a much better understanding of how to maximise their advantages and create favourable situations in-game.
Developing and capitalising on advantages continues to be a key focus. Effective movement, quick decision-making from the catch, and adapting to the modern style of play are all areas where players are showing growth and developing new skills.
Work on out-of-bounds situations and initiating offensive plays to create scoring opportunities was another important focus and is progressing well. The team is also improving its ability to read defensive adjustments and exploit situations where an advantage can be gained.
All of this progress was evident during the extended scrimmage at the end of the session, as well as in the small-sided games throughout practice.
Despite a few absences due to Easter breaks, the session was well attended. The next step is the Weston Weekender, where the team will face strong opposition alongside a full weekend of training.
Head Coach Danny James said:
“Another really positive preparation session. Adam and I are seeing real progress within the group. It’s great to work with players who are so committed to developing as a team. For many, it means adapting how they’ve previously played and learning a new approach to the game. We’re excited for the upcoming May weekend and are really looking forward to seeing the players in a competitive environment.”
