+50s FIMBA GB Men Complete Final Preparation Camp Ahead of Athens

The FIMBA GB +50s Men Blue and Red teams have completed their final preparation weekend ahead of the European Championships in Athens, which begin on 26 June.

The squad gathered at a new venue for their final camp, moving from their usual base in Kenilworth to the Oxfordshire countryside at Cothill School. The change of setting provided an ideal environment for focused, tournament-ready preparation as both teams enter the final stages of their build-up.

Led by Head Coach Danny James, the camp was shaped by valuable lessons learned during the recent Weston-super-Mare weekend. A series of competitive games highlighted both strengths and areas requiring further attention, allowing the coaching staff to focus on aspects of performance that fell below the standards expected of the group.

The weekend created an excellent platform for open discussion and reflection. Players reviewed recent performances, shared learning points, and worked collectively to address key areas of development. The result was a highly engaged and positive environment, with everyone fully understanding the objectives and embracing the process.

Throughout the camp, there were multiple opportunities to break the game down into specific areas while reinforcing the team’s overall identity. While playing with pace remains a cornerstone of the team’s philosophy, there was a strong emphasis on understanding that speed does not mean rushing. Sessions also revisited out-of-bounds plays and explored game situations where simple, effective actions can create high-quality scoring opportunities or generate momentum.

A key theme across the weekend was recognising advantage and disadvantage situations and developing a deeper understanding of how to exploit those moments to the team’s benefit.

Reflecting on the journey so far, the progress made since the first sessions in September and October has been significant. Bringing together 25 individuals and building a strong team culture and family environment has been central to the programme’s development and its pursuit of success in Athens.

Both teams are shaping up to be highly competitive as the tournament approaches. The players have fully bought into the coaching staff’s philosophy and expectations. For many, this has involved adapting to a style of basketball that differs significantly from the game they played in their younger years. As the sport continues to evolve, the willingness of players to embrace change has been a rewarding aspect of the programme, with clear evidence of development across the squad.

Feedback during and after sessions has also demonstrated how effectively the coaching staff’s planning and delivery have translated onto the court.

Head Coach Danny James said:

“I am extremely proud of the whole team, both on and off the court. We have created a professional environment, from day-to-day management and communication to detailed preparation planning and tournament support. This includes having our own physiotherapist travelling with the team to support the players throughout the competition.

“Now we get down to business and enjoy the fruits of our labour — roll on Athens.”
