+50 Women Pesaro Review

Almost 6 months since their first trial and training camp, the FIMBA European Maxibasketball in Pesaro, Italy began for the FIMBA GB +50 women.

First up the home side, Italy. It was a close game with Italy leading by 1 point at half time. The Italians had a great 3rd quarter, gaining a lead we couldn’t claw back despite a strong team effort from GB. They took the win and went on to take the silver medal.

Next up, Ireland, who had also been undone by the Italians making this a must win game to have a chance to fight for medals. The game lived up to its billing with brilliant teamwork, clutch shooting and endless hustle by both teams. 13 lead changes and two overtimes later, sadly it was the Irish who eventually took the win. Although gutted and exhausted, we were hugely proud of our performance. The fans of both teams were incredible creating a deafening and intense atmosphere.  Everyone lucky enough to be there said it was a game for the ages and a fantastic advert for women’s masters basketball.

No rest for us as it was another Italian team from Roma next. We won the game convincingly with strong defence, balanced scoring across the team and plenty of fast breaks. Our last game before a well-earned day off was against a FIMBA Americas team. This non-European game gave us a chance to experience the competition we will face in the World Championships in 2025. We had the opportunity to play against a 6’6 ex-WNBA professional player and Olympic silver medalist. We have never felt so small but we did a good job of playing aggressive defence to limit her as much as possible.

That evening we had a gorgeous Italian meal together followed by a well earned rest day. Some of the team enjoyed a day trip to Urbino for a bit of Italian culture, sharing our secrets by the whispering wall.

Finally our last game was upon us, a match up against GB Maxiballers. In a sweltering sports hall it was a tight affair with neither team able to pull away. Our great defensive effort and timely baskets resulted in a draw at the buzzer so began our second overtime game of the championship. We were determined not to lose another overtime game and with focussed defensive pressure and clutch free throws we got a well deserved win. A quick dip in the sea and celebratory drink before cheering on the FIMBA +55 Women to another victory. All in all our most successful tournament yet with 2 wins and 3 losses, one of which could have gone either way. The FIMBA GB +50 Women were a tight knit squad and we think this showed on and off the court. Bring on Switzerland 2025.
