GB Forties making big strides

The FIMBA GB +40 Women were back on court at the weekend for a two day camp at their new home in Leicester.

With new faces joining some of the core group, Coach Harrison built a session aimed at bringing the whole squad up to speed quickly, whilst still pushing them hard to better one another.

Day 1 started with a welcome speech from the coaching team, setting out the ground rules and expectations of the squad on off the court before announcing Charlie Lauder as Captain and Michelle Fellerdale as Vice Captain for the 2024 season. The two leaders then took the players aside for a quick chat before taking them through a good warmup and stretch.

Defence was the focus on Saturday, with a host of individual and group drills that pushed the squad hard, allowing Assistant Coach Lauder to really see how the new players reacted when tired and under pressure. The work ethic was excellent across the group and they kept working hard from the first minute to the last.

I was really impressed by how quickly the new players settled in to the squad, both in terms of understanding each other and the overall strategy, but also with the spirit of the team and FIMBA GB. They pushed themselves hard, with a very high intensity level, but also pushed and encouraged the wider group.

On Sunday the focus moved to offence, working on the overall team and improving the areas highlighted after the Halifax tournament and previous sessions. Coach Harrison focusing on the team plays and positioning and Assistant Coach Lauder focusing on the individual elements. Another high intensity day of drills and skills but again, the team stepped up to the challenge, even breaking into an impromptu Gangnam style dance halfway through the session!

This weekend was one of the best we’ve had as a group. Fun, intense and making huge strides forward. I’m excited about what we’re building for Pesaro 2024.
