The third training session of 2025 for the FIMBA GB +50 Women was created for the squad to firm up on the offensive and defensive strategies and put them to the test against a team of younger players based in Leicester.
Saturday’s training session started with a mix of warm-up drills designed to sharpen up the passing and shooting before focusing on various game situations geared up to help find ways of generating a great team scoring opportunity rather than good individual shot.
Taking pride in prioritising team assists over personal scores is a key philosophy to this team achieving success. The passion shown in creating scores for others was clearly evident during the training session and we took this positive attitude to the game on Sunday to be put into practise.
Coach Phil Gander
Sunday’s game started slowly for GB but they were able to turn things and apply the philosophy learned on Saturday to lead to victory. Most pleasing was how the team continued to run the fastbreak to good affect against a younger opposition making great decisions throughout the match. The half court defence has always been strong but using it to full effect generating high percentage scores will certainly be key this year.
A team meal was once again arranged by Player/Coach Hazel at Turtle Bay in Leicester where the happy hour cocktails really hit the spot! They then headed to a local sports bar after the meal for some team table tennis fun with various games enjoyed and, of course, they couldn’t resist taking part in some arcade basketball action also, narrowly missing out on the machine’s high score on several occasions!
A number of players will be attending the Kilkenny Masters over the weekend of Saturday 1st March before the team take part in a mini tournament at RAF Cosford with our over +55s team the weekend of Saturday 22nd March.
