+50 Men Training Steps Up Another Level

The FIMBA GB +50 Men’s squad joined up again as guests of the Abingdon Eagles at the weekend for another group session in preparation for the coming World Cup in April and World Championships in June.

With a couple of injuries to personnel and the odd player playing through minor problems the team were still at a decent level and took to the court eager to build from their strong showing in Manchester the previous month. The players took to the court with the eagerness of youth and the confidence of veterans and after a good hour of skills and tactical based drills the squad settled into getting acquainted with the defensive sets, showing their ability to learn and adapt during “in-game” situations.

With Sam Jones, Graham Cullingworth and Cieran Breen communicating effortlessly to the others like they had been playing together for decades, the team acted and reacted at lightning speed. It was the living answer to what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object as Lee  Duckett passed and found open players for shots whilst swarming defence from Justin Edward’s swiftly countered plays.

With the steady hands and sniper range of Team Captain Danny James, Phil Mathews and new addition Matt Godfrey, the team absorbed new offence sets and executed with the zeal of Henry the 8th’s axemen on news of a new engagement! Armed with two new plays to bolster the existing offensive sets, and a constantly smothering defence, the team went toe to toe with each other, playing like they had been together for years.

With a few more sessions before the first test in Croatia the team showed a level of communication, bonding and adaptability that was mouth-watering to see. Having the luxury of being able to throw the ball into the two inside behemoth’s that are Daryl Warden and Mat Everitt to release the defensive pressure is priceless

Coach Taylor

I’m impressed with how the guy’s are gelling so quickly both on and off the court so effectively for the good of the team, the banter in the group chat and the way that translates to the court makes my job of leading on the floor so much easier

Captain Danny James

Thanks again to the Abingdon Eagles family for hosting our GB team.
