The World Cup Silver medallist, FIMBA GB Forties, had their penultimate camp at the weekend, looking to build on their success in Croatia as they head to the World Championships in Switzerland next month.
The team travelling to Switzerland were joined by some of the wider squad members to help push the players forward and provide feedback and support to their teammates.
The session started with a quick overview of what the World Cup highlighted to work on over the two days, as well as gather feedback from the players on ambitions for the weekend. The players from the two teams that competed at the World Cup were then awarded their medal pendants for their tracksuits in recognition of the Silver and Bronze medals won.
The session started with some 2v2 and 3v3 work concentrating on specific aspects of each of the plays, as well as a named scorer drill, where the players had to work to get the appointed scorer open. The focus then switched to shooting, using the analysis from the stats, shot selection and percentages from the World Cup matches, to work on technique and shot selection based on position on the court.
The session finished with game play and scenarios with “in-game” coaching to highlight improvements. After the cooldown, the players had an amazing surprise as they received their Air Jordans for the opening ceremony, kindly donated by one of the team’s sponsors.
It was great to get everyone together again and celebrate our success in Croatia. We learned a lot from the World Cup, especially our final defeat and this weekend allowed us to address that so we will be ready for whatever Ticino throws at us – lets go GB!!
Charlie Lauder, Captain
Day 2 was more of the same, building on the learnings from Saturday, honing their shooting and focussing on the various opportunities the plays create. Defensive work followed, looking at both man and zone, as well as defending the screen, before finishing off with 5 on 5 play, as the players continued to get to know each others’ games and work smarter for each other.
The team continue to grow with and for each other and we move forward with excitement and belief after a good weekend camp. We are also really excited to announce Joss (Mostert) as Vice Captain for Switzerland. Joss compliments Charlie perfectly, bringing a high level of IQ and leadership to our frontcourt. The management group made the decision before Croatia, but unfortunately she picked up a nasty ankle injury in the very same training camp, so had to pull out of the tournament postponing our decision. Knowing she will be fighting fit for Switzerland, it was great to offer the appointment and have her accept.
Bruce Lauder, Assistant Coach
There is just a one day camp left before the team head to the World Championships, where they will take on the World’s best from Europe, the Americas and Asia. The group draw will be made live, 27th May on the FIMBA Maxibasketball YouTube channel.
