Nineteen players attended the +O70 Men’s selection weekend on 15th/16th February, representing an excellent turnout for an age category that continues to grow in both numbers and standard. The level of commitment shown across the weekend was particularly encouraging, with players travelling from across the country and demonstrating strong enthusiasm to represent GB at the upcoming tournament in Athens.
The sessions were well structured and competitive throughout. Coach Jeff Jones and his staff focused on core fundamentals, defensive organisation, half-court execution and game management, while also assessing fitness levels, communication, and overall team balance. Despite this being an over-70s category, the intensity remained high, with players showing impressive skill retention, tactical understanding and resilience. There was clear evidence that many participants had prepared thoroughly in advance of the weekend.
Importantly, the group dynamic was positive from the outset. Players supported one another, competed in the right spirit, and showed a collective desire to build something strong together. As with any selection process, difficult decisions now lie ahead, but the depth of quality on display reflects how much this age group is developing within the GB Masters pathway.
This week, Coach Jeff Jones will select a wider training squad of 14–15 players. That group will continue preparations with the aim of finalising the 12-player team that will travel to Athens. The focus now shifts toward refining combinations, solidifying roles, and ensuring the squad is physically and tactically prepared to compete at international level.
Overall, the weekend marked a very positive step forward for the +O70 Men’s programme, underlining both its growth and its competitive potential.
Head Coach Jeff Jones reflected positively on the weekend:
“It was extremely encouraging to see nine players competing at such a high level in the Over-70 category. The commitment, fitness, and basketball IQ on display across the two days were outstanding. Selection is never easy, particularly when everyone has given their all, but that’s a good problem to have.
Our focus now is on building a squad that can compete strongly in Athens. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be looking closely at combinations, roles, and overall team balance to ensure we select the best possible 12 to represent GB. The standard this weekend gives us real optimism.”
