+65s Men Get Introduced to their new Assistant Coach, Sam

Another extremely positive training weekend took place in Rothwell for the Men’s +65s squad.

Saturday’s session began with the introduction of our newly appointed Assistant Coach, Sam Montgomery, who brings strong experience as both a coach and a player. Her fast-break drills immediately challenged and stretched the squad. The session opened with a structured warm-up incorporating ball-handling and dynamic stretching, before moving into passing drills designed to test players both physically and mentally under pressure.

A significant focus was placed on fast-break execution, with an emphasis on making good decisions at speed and finishing efficiently. Scrimmages were introduced at various points to allow players to apply these skills in game situations. The team also revisited the Flex offence, reinforcing the importance of screening, spacing, and continuous movement. The intensity and effort levels were high throughout, and the squad certainly felt the workload by the end of the session.

Sunday’s session was enhanced by players from Desborough Basketball Club, who joined us to provide opposition for scrimmage play. Following the warm-up, a competitive and well-balanced game ensued, from which both teams benefited. During the scrimmage, the +65s focused on running the Flex offence against a zone defence, as well as motion offence versus man-to-man defence.

Overall, the weekend demonstrated clear improvement, strong team spirit, and a squad that is beginning to take real shape. There has been notable progress in man-to-man defence and fast-break execution. This was also our best-attended weekend to date, including several new faces joining the programme for the first time.

Sam, Bob, and Nathaniel were all very pleased with how the weekend went, and all feel confident that a squad for Athens can now be selected based on the consistent attendance and commitment shown over the past few weekends.
