The recent training weekend proved to be another productive and well-received camp. Players responded positively to the varied and purposeful drills, with clear recognition of the progress being made. Our primary focus was on enhancing ball speed and improving communication, with the objective of developing this talented group of individuals into a cohesive and disciplined unit.
A number of practice themes were reinforced throughout the weekend. The “rock–paper–scissors” reaction drill highlighted the importance of quick thinking and decisive action. While the squad demonstrates strong technical ability, there remains a tendency at times to overanalyse offensive situations, which can delay instinctive play. We continue to emphasise the principle of shooting, passing, or driving within 0.5 seconds of receiving the ball to promote fluidity and tempo.
We also introduced greater clarity around offensive rebounding responsibilities, with the intention of establishing this as a consistent standard. Defining these roles should reduce hesitation and increase accountability. Our fast break structure continues to develop effectively, supported by the introduction of a double-points incentive for scores achieved within the first eight seconds of possession. This initiative has encouraged urgency and positive attacking intent. Defensively, communication calls of “Ball”, “Down”, and “Dead” are becoming more consistent and effective.
As players grow increasingly comfortable within the Flex/Wheel system, we anticipate a reduction in overthinking and a corresponding increase in vocal leadership and instinctive decision-making. Future sessions will focus on further reducing decision-making time and strengthening vocal accountability. The continued application of the 0.5-second rule, alongside communication-based consequences within drills, will support the transition from a processing mindset to a more assertive and instinctive style of play. The reaction-based drills introduced this weekend appear to have had a measurable impact on players’ mental responsiveness, while maintaining a positive and engaging training environment.
With five of the ten scheduled training weekends now completed, we have reached the midpoint of our preparation programme. The progress to date has been significant. The next phase will require sustained repetition, increased ownership from players, and consistent communication standards. Overall, the programme remains on track and development continues in a positive direction.
Head Coach – Bob Mitchell “We’re seeing steady, measurable progress with this group. The players have embraced the standards we’re setting around ball speed, communication and accountability, and that’s beginning to translate into a more cohesive style of play. Our focus now is on reducing hesitation, reinforcing instinctive decision-making, and ensuring every player takes ownership of their role. If we maintain that discipline and commitment over the next phase of preparation, we’ll put ourselves in a very strong position.”
