FIMBA GB Masters hosted the first ever Wheelchair basketball camp at the weekend in Liverpool. In partnership with British Wheelchair Basketball, Greenbank Sports Academy and Mobility in Motion, we welcomed players from all over the UK.
This was the first camp of it’s kind as FIMBA GB looks to pioneer the Wheelchair Masters game globally, and in true FIMBA GB fashion, there was a mix of basketball backgrounds from recreational to Paralympians.
After registration, the large group of players were welcomed by FIMBA GB Head of Wheelchair Basketball, Bruce Lauder, who detailed the vision of the future for the squad and the aims and ambitions for the season.

Highly experienced coach, Gary Peel, then took over to discuss his expectations of the players before starting the warmup. Right from the word go, there was a real buzz of nervous excitement on the court, as the group put the balls down and partook in some fun drills focussed on chair control and communication.
I was absolutely delighted with such a large turnout as we look to build this new exciting adventure. The standard of play, camaraderie and teamwork was very high for a first camp and the players were clearly enjoying the session

After a debrief of why the drills were so important and what to take away, the group was split into categorisations for some shooting and defensive drills, before being split into 4 teams for scrimmages.
After 3 hours of hard work and intense competition, the players wanted to keep going, which was great to witness. I am so excited for the next step in this journey and look forward to bringing them into the wider FIMBA GB family once all teams get back to action. We are in discussions with BWB, IWBF and various tournament organising committees around the world to create an incredible journey for this new group of players.

The next camp will be in October, hosted at Greenbank Leisure Centre again, with the full training calendar being released over the coming weeks. If you want to get involved as a player, coach or team manager please complete the registration form.
