+55s FIMBA GB Women ramp up towards Athens

The GB Women Over 55’s gathered in Coventry on the 28th and 29th March for a productive and high energy training weekend ahead of domestic tournaments and in preparation for their participation in the European Championships in Athens in June 2026.

Following a successful defence of their title in the Oxford tournament, the players took part in conditioning exercises looking to improve on the individual results gained during previous training weekends. Improvement was seen in most areas but most noticeably in individual free throw percentages.  As this was the team’s last training weekend prior to competitions it was encouraging to see the continued commitment from the players in understanding the various plays and strategies set out by Coaches Stu Coffey and Ged Donnelly.

The effort displayed during competitive scrimmaging during the weekend showed how well the preparation is going in readiness for success in Athens.

Time was taken at the weekend to present Sam Wright with her GB kit. Sam is the team’s newest member and has already proved her skills and experience as a point guard which is a real asset to the team.

The next competition for the team is a tournament at RAF Cosford in April and then in May in Dublin where the team will defend their title for the third year running.

Coach Stu Coffey said “there was evidence of lots of pre training study on show at the weekend and this was supported by credible performances, physical assessment and free throw shooting demonstrating progress all round”.  Coach Coffey encouraged players to continue with their own individual fitness and strength & conditioning plans to ensure that all players are in the best shape possible for the European Championships in Athens.
