Sunday’s training session represented a highly positive and productive step forward for both the +40s & +45s squads as preparations continue for the upcoming tournament in Athens this June. The overall atmosphere was excellent, characterised by strong focus, enthusiasm, and a clear collective commitment from all players. Both groups trained with intensity while maintaining a supportive and cohesive environment across the programme.
From the outset, energy and engagement levels were high. Players arrived well-prepared and ready to work, setting the tone for a constructive and purposeful session. The warm-up phase was conducted with professionalism, with effective communication and the appropriate mindset evident throughout.
Movement, ball-handling, and early shooting drills were performed at a strong tempo, helping to establish rhythm and concentration before progressing into more structured team activities.
A key focus of the session was the continued development of team cohesion and on-court understanding, particularly among players still becoming familiar with one another’s tendencies and styles of play. Encouragingly, there were clear signs of progress in this area. Communication on court was noticeably improved, and players demonstrated an increased willingness to support each other in both offensive and defensive phases. Engagement levels remained consistently high, with all players contributing positively during drills and scrimmage segments.
Equally pleasing was the overall attitude across both squads. The commitment to the programme, alongside the shared ambition of representing Great Britain in Athens, was evident throughout. Players remained positive, competitive, and focused on continuous improvement—an essential foundation for building a successful team environment.
While the session was highly encouraging, it is important to recognise that the group remains in the early stages of its development. There is still significant work to be done ahead of June. Ongoing progress will depend on sustaining this level of commitment, improving consistency in execution, and further strengthening understanding between players across both squads. Each upcoming session will provide a valuable opportunity to refine systems, build chemistry, and enhance the physical and tactical readiness required for international competition.
Overall, Sunday’s session marks another promising step on the journey toward Athens. Strong foundations are being established, squad cohesion is improving steadily, and player engagement continues to be of a high standard.
Head Coach AJ reflected positively on the session, highlighting both the progress made and the work still to come:
“Sunday was a really encouraging step forward for both groups. The level of focus, energy, and intent from the players was exactly what we’re looking for at this stage of the programme. You can see relationships starting to build on court, and that’s crucial for where we want to get to by June.
What stood out most was the attitude—players are buying into what we’re trying to do, they’re supporting each other, and there’s a genuine commitment to improving every time we come together. That’s the foundation of any successful team.
We’re still early in the process, and there’s plenty of work ahead of us, but sessions like this show we’re moving in the right direction. If we maintain this level of application and continue to build our cohesion, we’ll put ourselves in a strong position heading into Athens.”
