Going from strength to strength the +65s continue their road to Athens.
The GB Over 65s Men’s team gathered in Rothwell over the weekend for an intensive training camp that showcased both their growing cohesion and their relentless commitment to improving ahead of forthcoming competitions. All twelve attending players demonstrated exceptional work ethic throughout the two-day programme, with notable progress particularly evident in the areas of pressure defence and fast-break execution.
Training Focus and Performance
Across the sessions, the coaching staff placed a strong emphasis on maintaining high defensive intensity. Players responded with determination, repeatedly pushing themselves through demanding drills designed to elevate responsiveness, communication, and sustained pressure on opposition ball-handlers.
The squad’s fast-break development was equally impressive. Through structured repetition and live-scenario practice, the team improved their ability to transition quickly from defence to offence. As a result, the group displayed far greater fluidity in movement, spacing, and decision-making during scrimmage play.
Team Cohesion
One of the standout successes of the weekend was the continued strengthening of team culture. Players supported one another throughout the camp, offering encouragement, constructive feedback, and genuine camaraderie both on and off the court.
A key contributor to this positive environment was the team-building meal on Saturday night, organised by Team Manager Nate. The evening offered players the chance to connect in a relaxed setting, fostering trust and communication—both essential components of effective team performance. The squad extends a heartfelt thank you to Nate for his excellent planning and support throughout the entire weekend.
Scrimmage Session
On Sunday, the team benefited from a valuable scrimmage against Desborough Basketball Club, who have now provided opposition for three consecutive training camps. Their willingness to support the GB programme continues to make a significant impact on the team’s development. The GB Over 65s extend their sincere appreciation for the ongoing partnership and high-quality competition.
The scrimmage offered a strong test of the defensive and transition principles developed in training, and the squad rose to the challenge, demonstrating improved cohesion, quicker decision-making, and growing confidence in applying their systems under pressure.
Overall Assessment
The weekend in Rothwell marks an important step forward in the preparation of the GB Over 65s Men’s Team. With enhanced tactical sharpness, improving physical readiness, and a strengthening team bond, the squad is moving firmly in the right direction.
The coaching and management staff commend the players for their effort, attitude, and professionalism—and look forward to building on this momentum at the next camp.
“What stood out this weekend was the hunger this group has to improve. Their commitment to defending hard and running the floor was first-class. The team spirit is growing every session, and we’re beginning to see a blend of experience, resilience, and togetherness that will serve us extremely well moving forward.”
