+60s Men go from strength to strength

The Men’s Over 60s squad held their latest training weekend at the excellent Caludon Castle Sports Complex in Walsgrave, Coventry. Although the session coincided with the Galway Masters event in Ireland — meaning several players were away enjoying the renowned Irish hospitality — a strong group of fifteen dedicated players attended and delivered an excellent weekend of basketball.

Under the guidance of Coach Roger Payne, the session focused on sharpening offensive movement and control, with specific emphasis on forwards learning how to create space and get free, alongside guards refining their ball-handling and decision-making. The drills were high in intensity and purposeful, with plenty of competitive spirit on display throughout.

It was particularly encouraging to see George Branch back in action, looking sharp and making a strong case for selection in one of the Over 60s squads being assembled for the upcoming tournaments in Croatia and Athens. The enthusiasm and work ethic of the group continue to set the tone for what promises to be an exciting year ahead.

A decision is still to be made on whether we will enter two or three Men’s Over 60s teams, which will ultimately depend on player availability. However, the signs are very positive, and the commitment from those training so far suggests we’ll have plenty of depth and experience to draw from.

The next training weekend is coming up soon at Beauchamp College, Oadby, Leicestershire, on Saturday 15th November (14:00–17:00) and Sunday 16th November (10:30–12:30). This will be followed by another session at All Saints Sports Centre, Sheffield, on Saturday 6th December (15:30–18:00) and Sunday 7th December (09:00–11:00).

As Coach Payne reminds the squad — “Preparation is everything, and every session counts.” So, don’t delay — confirm your attendance via the Spond app and make sure you’re part of the next step in the Over 60s journey toward international competition.
